Job Title: Radio Operator (Pool)
Location: Dar es Salaam
Reports to: Logistics Supervisor
Technical Support: Information Systems Specialist

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters, and exclusion from healthcare. MSF offers assistance based on need, irrespective of race, religion, gender, or political affiliation, and is guided by the principles of neutrality and impartiality. These principles apply to all MSF staff.

Main Purpose
To operate VHF and HF radios in line with MSF security protocols and rules, ensuring quality and confidential radio communications for the operational needs of the project.

Key Accountabilities
  • Operate HF and VHF radios, avoiding sensitive or security-related information and following MSF security rules.
  • Ensure the quality and transmission capacity of radio frequencies (HF and VHF); install and program frequencies when necessary.
  • Copy, forward, and record all messages in the radio logbook; respond to radio contacts from other approved organizations.
  • Make scheduled radio contacts with reference bases and report security information to the Project Coordinator.
  • Monitor and register movement of people, vehicles, helicopters, airplanes, and cargo, and report delays.
  • Supervise and monitor the VHF radio allocation book and follow up on loaned handsets.
  • Install, operate, and perform preventive maintenance checks on radio equipment; report any damage, loss, or theft immediately.
  • Maintain the radio room, equipment, and HF/VHF batteries in good condition.
  • Provide basic radio training to MSF staff when necessary.
  • Manage all mobile phones assigned to the radio room and receive incoming calls.
  • Coordinate with the Head Driver on planning and dispatching vehicles/ambulances.
  • Switch generators and call the mechanic in case of generator shutdown during nights or weekends.
  • Ensure staff using walkie-talkies, tablets, and handsets sign them out before use and back in upon return.
Minimum Education Requirement
  • Literacy (essential)
  • Secondary education (desirable)
Experience
  • Work experience as a radio operator or in related roles (desirable)
Languages
  • Fluent English and Kiswahili, oral and written
